descended on both sides from Scotch ancestry, although the
BYRD and McCLINTIC families have been established in this
country for many generations. The BYRDs date back in the
history of Bath County to 1750 when John BYRD, the pioneer
of the family, came here from Pennsylvania and took up
land on the Jackson River. Here he was living comfortably
with his wife and six children when they were surprised in
1756, by a savage raid of hostile Indians in which he lost
his life and his widow and the children were taken as
captives by the Indians to the Valley of Ohio. Eight
years later the white settlers made a raid on the Indians
and brought back to Bath County the only surviving member
of the family, a son, also named John who thereafter was
known as 'Indian' John. Having grown up among the
Indians, he had been taken into the tribe, and had
embraced many of the savage customs, among others that of
wearing rings in his ears and nose. He came with the
members of his own race very unwillingly, and on the
return made two abortive attempts to escape. With his
return to Bath County and settlement on his father's
homestead, he gradually lost his longing for his former
captors, and became a useful and respected citizen. He
married a member of the HAMILTON family, and one of their
sons, Andrew H. BYRD, became one of the most distinguished
men of Highland County, of which he was the founder, as
he, then a member of the House of delegates, introduced
and carried through the bill creating this county. --- He
traded the family property on Jackson River for Byrd's
Nest a fine property of 457 acres at the conjunction of
Bull Pasture and Cow Pasture, from the CAMMERON's in 1837,
and there he continued to reside. During the War of 1812
he served his country as a soldier. He married Elizabeth
CAPITO of Franklin, Pendleton co., VA, who died in 1886,
at the age of ninety-one years, one month and one day,
having long survived her husband, who passed away at the
age of seventy-five years. One of his sons, Maj. John T.
BYRD, the father of Judge BYRD, was born on Jackson River,
below the Fassiborn farm in Bath County, VA in May 1828
and died at Byrd's Nest in 1912.---" See Bruce's,

his 20th year ---. My youngest boy Jesse is in his 18th
year. My two oldest daughters are married well and living
in Ky. My youngest daughter is teaching in the Marvin
