LONGWOOD, SAUNDERS, SCRUGGS, WALKER -
My great-great-grandmother was Mary SAUNDERS who married Major William JONES
(1779-1832) of Campbell County, VA circa 1798/99. He was the son of William Richard JONES
(1745-1781) and Agness WALKER (1749-1798). William Richard was killed at the battle of
Guilford Courthouse, NC in 1781. He was the son of John and Elizabeth WALKER
JONES of Buckingham County, VA. William and Agness had settled in Bedford County, VA in
that portion which became Campbell County, VA in 1780. His five sons were born in Bedford County
but the Probate records are in Campbell County created after William wrote his Will in 1780.
The information that Mary was a Saunders comes from Ethel Hastings Scruggs Dunklin's - The
Scruggs Genealogy (1912). After the death of Major William JONES in 1832, Mary
married Gross SCRUGGS in Madison County, AL in 1833, his third wife. Like the
JONES', the SCRUGGS were originally from Buckingham, Bedford and Campbell Counties,
VA and came to Alabama in 1818. The JONES' and SCRUGGS' were close neighbors in
Madison County, AL.
Mrs. Dunklin's evidence is two-fold: (1) Gross SCRUGGS, Jr., the
third son of Gross SCRUGGS and his first wife, Nancy LONGWOOD, was born in Virginia
in 1796 and married Mary Susan SAUNDERS of Tennessee "a niece of his step-mother." (2)
Mary SAUNDERS JONES SCRUGGS died in 1850. Her will was written in 1845 and
was witnessed by William T. SAUNDERS, her nephew. She gave a small feather bed to her
step-daughter, Elloisa SCRUGGS who married William in 1846. However, in the 1850 census of
Madison County, AL, he is listed as William J. SAUNDERS and born in Virginia. His wife was
24 and born in AL. They have two daughters.
William and Mary SAUNDERS JONES
had seven children to survive. The eldest was James S. (Saunders?) JONES (1800-1853. In
her Will, Mary left six silver teaspoons and 6 silver tablespoons to James. This suggests that
these might have been SAUNDERS silver.
Mary SAUNDERS JONES
SCRUGGS was buried in the Scruggs Cemetery in Madison County, AL. Efforts to find
that Cemetery have failed. Consequently, there is no tombstone extant. Dates come from court
records.
I would appreciate any help anyone can provide on the ancestry of Mary
SAUNDERS JONES SCRUGGS.

McCARGO, TRACY -
Trying to determine if this Solomon Tracy, born abt 1759, served in Revolutionary War in
Col. Campbell's Regiment, listed in 1810 Bedford County, Virginia, received land grant in
Kentucky, would be the same Solomon Tracy who died in Batholomew County, Indiana about
1840. Listed in 1840 Indiana census, age 90, pensioner. He appears to be listed in 1820 Madison
Co., Kentucky census and 1830 Oldham Co., Kentucky census. May have married Kitty Miller
