This map takes even longer to load ... but you can query on the property owners, by "clicking" on the binocular icon.
You'll need to authorize download of a "Control Routine", and probably need to experiment on how to use the various controls. I haven't figured them out yet. (Hint: Use the Right-hand Mouse button for a menu of options.)

The Hornbook of Virginia History

Bedford County was probably named for John Russell, fourth duke of Bedford, who, as secretary of state for the southern department from 1748 to 1751, had general supervision of colonial affairs.
Parishes: Cumberland 1753-1756 (also Lunenburg Co), Russell (also Campbell Co. & Franklin Co.)

Bedford County Marriage Bonds

Extracted from the appendix in Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol VI, Virginia. (Marriages are NOT Quaker) They've been grouped by surname, and arranged chronologically. The bonds are also listed under the bride's surname.

The format is generally: Date of bond; information on the groom, & information on the bride; Surety; Consent by; Married by and date of marriage return.
All this information is not always present
Some abbreviations used are: s = son of, dt = daughter of, wd = widowed
The "Surety" is a person whose name appears on the bond as equally responsible to pay the bond's penalty amount to the state, if there is discovered some legal reason that the marriage cannot take place
Consent information seems to have been provided whenever the consent papers did not specify that the person giving consent was the father or mother of the bride or groom. Perhaps a step-father, uncle, or simply a guardian. Warning: Sureties were usually related, but not always, and even then they were not usually a parent

Assorted Marriages from Bedford Co, VA, Marriage Index

This is a file of "assorted" marriages, initially provided to us by Evelyn Huffman, and pertaining to her family research. To these, I've added the listings from my own research into the microfilmed marriage books. Subsequently, Patricia Bergener provided us with a large number of "assorted" records from her research in the Marriage Books, to which I've added my own.
Judy S. Fink has provided to us, her list of HOGAN marriages. I have added entries to the index listings, with HyperLinks to the marriage record.
If you have transcribed records from the marriage books, consider allowing them to be included here. There are two versions of the index:
1. sorted by Groom's Name, and
2. sorted by Bride's Name

Be warned, there may be errors!! Some marriage dates, and spelling of names, differ from those in the version of the index currently being published in the Genealogical Society's Newletter!!
