Will of James B. Lane

In the name of God Amen.  I James B. Lane of the County of Charlotte being at
this time very sick & the certainty of death do make and ordain this my last
will & testament in manner & form following.  First my will & desire is that all
of my just debts & funeral expences be first paid in the most advantage way.
That my executor herein after named may think proper.  2nd I lend unto my
beloved wife Sally Lane the whole of my land, negroes, stock of every
description, plantation, tools, household & kitchen furniture during her life or
widowhood & after her death or marriage I request the whole of my estate which I
have loand my said wife to be equally divided between of all of my children to
them & to their heirs forever.  And lastly, I do hereby nominate my friend John
Y. Richards Executor to this my last will & testament hereby revoking all other
wills made by me.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my
seal this the 8th day of November 1837.

At a court held for Charlotte County the 4th day of December 1837 this last will
and testament of James B. Lane decd was produced in court and the same was
proved by the oath of Thomas E. Moore and Brackett Watts two of the subscribing
witnesses and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of John Y. Richards, the
executor, therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with
George I. Roberts and Isaac Overby, his securities entered into and acknowledged
bond in the penalty of four thousand dollars.  Conditioned as the law requires.
Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of the said will in due form.

Know all whom it may concern that I Sally Lane widow of James B. Lane decd do
hereby declare that I will not take or accept the provision made for me in the
will of my deceased husband the said James B. Lane dated the day of one thousand
eight hundred and thirty seven and admitted to record by the County Court of
Charlotte on the 4th day of December 1837 and that I do hereby renounce all
benefit which I might claim by virtue of the said will.  In witness whereof I
have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 28th day of February 1838.

At a court held for Charlotte County the 5th day of March 1838, This declaration
was proved in court by the oaths of Frances Barnes and Robert W. Lane two of the
subscribing witnesses to be the act & deed of the said Sally Lane & ordered to
be recorded.
