The photo is among the Josephus
Gregory photographs, leading one to believe the photo is of Mrs. George
H. Lee (brother of Mrs. Josephus Gregory), rather than the wife of The
Rev. Henderson Lee.
It is known from family letters that George H. Lee was always referred
to as "Henderson" Lee. The George H. Lee family moved to Petersburg
in the 1840's where "Henderson" worked with his brother John,
and Caroline ("Carrie") taught school. It is not known if they
were still in Petersburg when Caroline died in 1854, but it is known Henderson
and the children, Adele, Helen and George Junr returned to Lunenburg.
Adele moved to Henry County to teach; Helen and Georgie stayed at the
Josephus Gregory place, where Georgie died as a child. "Henderson"
entered the Confederate Army and died in service.
The original of the above photograph of Mrs. Henderson Lee is quite deteriorated
and was retouched. Click to view the original
