Meherrin School
|
From the above, "Joseph E. Knight At Meherin [S]chool," one might assume there was a school of that name in the Knight neighborhood in 1872. Possibly the Meherrin School was conducted in the same structure as Old Meherrin Baptist Church 1771 - 1844, which Carter Thompson has placed on Rt #719 (Adam's Rd) near #623 (Plantersville Rd.). See Topozone map. Carter recalls as a child playing on the foundation of the old church. I have no record of how long the structure existed after 1844, but it is logical that it was used as a school house after 1844, as long as the structure survived and if a teacher was available. The confederate map (1860's) of Lunenburg shows two Knight families at Pledger's Fork (now Knight's Creek) near "Old Ch" - the old Meherrin Baptist Church. The confederate map shows east of Pledger's Fork a name that could be Watson, about where there is an old Watson plantation today. - JoLee Gregory Spears 8 Jul 2001 Names found on various pages of this book:
