Mecklenburg Co., VA Deed Bk 5, pp. 368-369:
Evans to Hogan: This Indenture entered into this seventeenth day of November in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight between William Evans of the County of Mecklenburg of the one part and Edward Hogan of the same county of the other part Witnesseth that the said William Evans for his part doth agree to and with the said Edward Hogan that he the said Edward Hogan shall and may have as long as he lives and his family twelve months after his death from the date of these presents full right and liberty to live on clear cultivate improve tend and make on all and every thing which he or they may think proper of and upon all either and every part of two certain tracts of lands containing one 446 acres the other 400 acres and from distinction the former the said William Evans had of his father and is the same one he now lives on he also had of his father the latter and is joining the land of his brother Stephen To have and to hold unto the said Edward Hogan and to his family as aforesaid for and during the term and time aforesaid a clear and indestructible right and title to the aforesaid two tracts of land and all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging in ? manner and form aforesaid only reserving to himself and his family the liberty of living where he now does the use of the houses on the place and every necessary liberty so as not to interrupt the said Edward Hogan nor his family in their persons nor in the necessary course of their business and such apart of what may be made upon the said lands and mentioned in the said Edward Hogan's part.
The said Edward Hogan for his part doth agree to and with the said William Evans in manner and form aforesaid to give and allow to the said William Evans his heirs etc. one share of what corn and tobacco he the said Edward Hogan may make upon the said lands in proportion to any number of hands which he the said Edward Hogan may think proper to put upon the same and to give to the said William Evans all and every kind of improvement which he may think proper to make thereon and reserving to himself the liberty to enter upon the premises whenever he may think proper and give up the same within the time limited as aforesaid In witness whereof the two partys (sic) hath hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals the day and year aforesaid.
