Mecklenburg Co., VA Deed Bk 26, pp. 391-392:

 

Roysters to Lewis: This Indenture made and entered into this 15th day of August one thousand eight hundred and thirty five between Clark Royster and Lucy his wife of the one part and Frederick Lewis of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said Clark Royster and Lucy his wife for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and sixty eight dollars to them in hand paid by the said Frederick Lewis at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof they the said Clark Royster and Lucy his wife doth hereby acknowledge hath given granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth give grant bargain and sell unto the said Frederick Lewis his heirs and assigns two certain lots or parcels of land lying and being in the County of Mecklenburg and near to and north of the town of Clarksville, containing about one and a half acres and bounded as follows, on the west by Fourth Street as extended in a straight line from the town of Clarksville on the north by the road opened by said Royster on the east by the land of Robert Andrews and on the south by the land of Francis W. Venable, they being two lots of land designated as No. 4 & 7 among the lots laid off by said Royster adjoining the town of Clarkesville (No. 7 contains one acre and fifteen rods & No. 4 about half an acre) together with all and singular its rights members and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining thereto to him the said Frederick Lewis his heirs and assigns forever to have and to hold the said lots or parcels of land with all and singular its rights members and appurtenances to him the said Frederick Lewis his heirs and assigns forever, and the said Clark Royster and Lucy his wife doth hereby covenant and agree to and with the said Frederick Lewis that they the said Clark Royster and Lucy his wife for themselves and their heirs the said lots or parcels of land to the said Frederick Lewis his heirs and assigns against the claim and demand of all and every other person or persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend. In witness whereof they the said Clark Royster and Lucy his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written.

Mecklenburg County to wit

                        We Samuel V. Watkins and Edwin A. Williams Justices of the peace in the county aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Clark Royster party to a certain deed bearing date on the 25th day of August 1835 and hereto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgement to the Clerk of the County Court of Mecklenburg in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 5th day of September 1835.

Mecklenburg County to wit
                        We Samuel V. Watkins and Edwin A. Williams Justices of the peace in the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Lucy Royster the wife of Clark Royster parties to a certain deed bearing date on the 25th day of August 1835 and hereunto annexed personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her, she the said Lucy Royster acknowledged the same to be her act and deed and declared that she had willingly signed sealed and delivered the same, and that she wished not to retract it. Given under our hands and seals this 5th day of September 1835.

                        The foregoing Indenture of Bargain and sale together with the certificates of acknowledgement and relinquishment of dower thereon endorsed was this day received in the Clerks Office aforesaid and pursuant to an Act of Assembly in such cases made and provided is admitted to record.
