| Ten Oaks Plantation Burwell's Mill - formerly Moore's Mill, formerly Joseph Gregory's Mill |
|
36° 50' 14N Col. Lyddal Bacon (1794-1875) purchased the 497-acre Ten Oaks tract in 1841, from estate of Edward Goode of Charlotte Co. The plantation adjoined the lands of Thomas Gayle (see above map link), Washington Pettus and Capt. Drury Allen Bacon. |

Thought to have been approximately 36° 52' 52"N, 78° 28' 31"W Fort Mitchell Quadrangle Burwell's Mill was on the South Fork of Meherrin River as it divides Lunenburg and Mecklenburg counties. Its location can be seen on both the Confederate J. F. Gilmer map of Lunenburg, and the 1870 map of Mecklenburg. The Lunenburg map shows it was on the east side of the road that led from Five Forks in Lunenburg to Finneywood in Mecklenburg. (The road now dead-ends at the river, privately owned on both sides.) |
