I use corn starch in an old thin men's sock. I fill the sock, then tap it along the face of the stone. It works great & does not damage the stone, the first rain washes it away. I keep it in a plastic bag & in a small box - Gayle
Carry a piece of children's sidewalk chalk - rub it on the stone and all but the impressions of the letters will be covered with chalk, making the stone easier to read, and of course, the next rain removes it all - Alley
When photographing stones: watch what's in your background and be careful to adjust to the angle of the sun, as you may be photographing your shadow. It is also a good idea with newer, polished stones, to make sure your reflection is not visible.
