BELL, CANTWELL, LANCHANTIN,
LAUCHANTIN, LUCAS, USHER -
Seeking information on marriage of James Dunn Usher the 3rd, death of his wife, birth/fate
of their child. He was son of James Dunn USHER (the 2nd) of NC and Lydia LUCAS of
SC. After husband's death in 1824 sawmill accident, Lydia married Patrick Cantwell in
Charleston, SC. Lydia and James' son James Dunn (b ca 1822) was raised by USHER relatives.
He received an early appointment as midshipman in US NAVY and purportedly married at age 15 to a
Miss Martha Eliza BELL of Virginia who was some kin (sister, niece?) to Commodore
Bell. After resigning Navy commission he and his wife reportedly lived "on farm near
Norfolk," where she died giving birth to only child Francenia USHER. What happened to
Francenia, who was third woman in family to carry this name? Did mother's family raise her?
Family papers suggest she was still alive at time of father's death in July 1871, but don't say
where. After her death her father was named officer in Revenue Service, w/ service including
command of the Revenue Cutter Dobbin off Portland, ME at close of Civil War. He married
again, date/place unknown to Kate Lanchantin/ Lauchantin of New York. Their
daughter Nellie became nun, Sister Mary Xavier, Convent of Mercy, Towanda, Pa. In 1871 James
Dunn died in New Bern, NC and was buried in Wilmington, NC in Cantwell plot, Oakdale Cemetery.
USHER, CANTWELL were Catholic; don't know about BELL, but think would be.
Willing to search NC records in exchange for VA records information. Thanks in advance.
