BAKER, BATTLE,
BUMPAS, BUMPASS, BUMPUS -
We are searching for the origins of Richard Baker; born about 1827 in VA, and died Oct 20,
1875 in Whitakers, Edgecombe County, NC. Richard lived and worked in Nash and Edgecombe counties
from around 1849 to the time of his death in 1875.
He married Nancy Bumpas
(Bumpass, Bumpus) 1849 in Edgecombe County. Children: Laura, Mary Francis, John
Henry, Martha Ann, James Carter, Richard Walker.
He served in Co G, 1st NC Artillery during
the civil war, enlisting in Sept 1863.
He, and other family members are buried in the Baker
family cemetery, on Fisher Road just west of Whitakers.
He apparently died intestate and
Jacob Battle was appointed to administer his estate. In 1884, son James Carter
Baker purchased 93 acres in Whitakers from the estate for $675. Later in 1886, Nancy
divided up a 25 acre plot giving each of her six children a plot of a little over 4 acres.
We
are specifically looking for any information about where in VA he might have come from, and who
his parents might have been. All references to his origins that we have found to date, simply
state "born in VA" and this has become our brick wall.
Thank You
Mike Hallett &

BROCKMAN, RICHARDSON -
Richardson, Washington Irvin b.10 Nov 1832
I am looking for W.I. Richardson who
according to Arkansas census records, he said that he was born in South Carolina, but I have
reason to doubt. I have a letter from an older relative (whose father knew WIR) that said: "that
he was born in Virginia Nov. 10-18-1832, he appeared in Cane Hill (Ark) after the war. They
called him Captain. No one knew where he came from. His family never knew. Nor did they know
anything about his wife Maggie or where she came from. No one knew his name was Washington
Irving." I have a copy of the marriage record WIR married Margaret Brockman 25 Jul 1869.

TEEL, WILLIAMS -
I am trying to find my grandmother's family. She was born Esther Juanita Williams on April
12, 1917 in Loudon County, Virginia. She told us that there was a fire in the courthouse and
records had been destroyed. Her mother was Rose Lee Williams nee Teel born on
December 24, 1886, Virgina. Her death certificate from the Maryland State Department of Health
lists her father as Richard Teel and her mother as Texanna. She died October 1, 1957.
Thank you,

DILDINE -
Jonathan Dildine was Revolutionary War soldier. He stated in his pension application that
he was born on the South Branch of the Potomac River in VA. He also statet that he was carried to
the Carolinas by his parents when he was a child. His age listed made it 1763. It is now WVA. I
would like to know if there are any records of any DILDINEs in the VA/WV area in the 1700s
or 1800s? He may be the grandson of Johannn Hermannus DILDINE who died in NJ in 1749. In
Hermannus's will he was missing a son named Herman. Jonatha's father was a Herman DILDINe
of NC/SC who fought for the British and was captured in the Snow Campaign and taken prisoner to
Charles Town. He was later pardoned I believe. Going from NJ to the Carolinas would have taken
them down the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road which started in NJ and ended in GA. It was basically
the Cherokee Indian trail. Jonathan is my ggggg-grandfather.
