RODDEN, RODEN, THOMPSON -
I've been trying to get information about the father of my 4th ggrandfather Archibald Thompson (1736-1802?). His son Ratliff Thompson (1767-1830?) was my 3rd ggrandfather. I know the following about Archibald's father from his diary and from what I have been able to gather. John Thompson was his father, and Mary Roden (Rodden) was his mother. The birth date of "a" John Thompson varies from 1702-1715 in Penrith, Cumberland,,England. Mary Roden's birth may be 1715. I have no place of birth for her. I do have a date for their marriage which was in Ireland---5 May 1734, but I don't know the county or town. The children were Anne (1735), Archibald (17 Jun 1736-11 May 1802? in Monroe Co., Ky), Mary Thompson (1739-1820). These children were born in Ireland. One researcher said that the fourth child Lucinda "Betsy" Thompson (1742-1838) may have been born in Ireland. I did find a mention that John Thompson immigrated to Virginia c1740. If this proves to be true, then Lucinda would have been born in Virginia. Betty Thompson 1744, and the remaining children would have been born in Virginia. Rebecca and George have the same birth year 1745 (twins?), and Roden (1748). That last son's name made me feel confident that maybe I was on the right road. For Mary Roden (1715-1782) I found that a Mary Roden Thompson had died in Kentucky, but I don't have any sourcing. Apparently, John had died in Virginia, and Mary had traveled to Kentucky with one her children's family where she lived her last days. I would like to substantiate what I have assumed to be factual or to learn the truth. I would like to be able to eventually trace John and Mary's roots back to Ireland/England. I did hire a researcher in Cumbria, England, with the result that there were at least 3 John Thompsons with birthdates ranging from 1702-1715 born and christened in Cumberland, England. They could not be positive which was my John Thompson. If I can find out about their lives in Virginia, it may help with finding out more about their family in Ireland/England. I've included all of the information that I have found of this family. I will continue to search, but if there is any information that can be found in Virginia, I will be grateful.
